Kerry highlights Kerry Solar City of Toño Astiazarán

In an unprecedented statement, the U.S. Special Climate Envoy, John Kerry, recognized the innovative government of the Mayor of Hermosillo, Antonio Astiazarán Gutiérrez, to fight climate change and considered the Sonoran capital as a “Solar City” and “emerging leader in renewable energies”.
The U.S. official highlighted some of Astiazarán’s government programs where solar energy is used, such as the fleet of electric patrols that are unique in the world, in addition to promoting the use of photovoltaic energy to supply homes, public lighting and even plans to use it in the public transportation system.

At the inauguration of the First World Solar Energy Forum held in Hermosillo promoted by the government of Antonio Astiazarán Gutiérrez, the former Vice President of the United States under Barack Obama, John Kerry, through a video message presented to those attending the event, highlighted the use of clean energy promoted by the mayor to turn this capital into a Solar City.
In the political history of Sonora, it had never been seen that a senior U.S. official such as Senator John Kerry, representative of U.S. President Joe Biden to address issues of climate change and the use of clean or green energy, dedicated a message on the progress in a municipal government, in this case Hermosillo, and to know the various programs implemented by Mayor Astiazarán for the protection of the environment by promoting the use of solar energy to make more efficient government and benefit society with photovoltaic energy at low cost through solar panels.
In the video message John Kerry highlighted that “Hermosillo has the largest fleet of electric patrol cars in the world and is in the process of changing the public lighting to solar energy, in addition to equipping private homes with solar panels as part of the Hermosillo Solar City program”,
The senior U.S. official said that Mayor Antonio Astiazarán is seeking qualified user status in the United States, which will allow his government to have access to renewable energy providers.

Kerry noted that “Hermosillo is collaborating with the Larkley National Laboratory in California to complete a pilot program to install high efficiency air conditioners to measure the impact on energy use, with the purpose of adopting that model of air conditioners here with the scorching heat, occasionally Hermosillo is one of the hottest cities on the planet”.
In addition, he noted that “Hermosillo was working with a team with the renewable energy laboratory in the United States to identify suppliers of charging stations for electric vehicles, and thus make changes in the transportation system. Greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced. Several of the most assertive energy companies in the United States accompanied me to the Solar City and are ready to join the efforts to make the world more sustainable”.
Mayor Toño Astiazarán and John Kerry met during Lopez Obrador’s last visit to Sonora to meet with the U.S. Special Climate Envoy at the State Government Palace in Hermosillo, where Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño presented the Sonora Renewable Energy Plan. On that occasion, Toño Astiazarán had a short talk with John Kerry where he presented his government programs where he uses solar energy, and perhaps in that meeting he invited him to the First World Solar Energy Forum, where he participated with a video message where he demonstrated that he was very well informed of the advances in the use of green energy in this Solar City.

At the inauguration of the First World Solar Energy Forum, Mayor Astiazarán Gutiérrez mentioned that the kilowatt generated with the sun is the “cheapest in the history of mankind”, and that in this municipality there is an enormous potential to convert it into savings.
Astiazarán explained the government’s actions in energy efficiency, such as the modernization of public lighting to 100 percent with LED technology and in some cases solar lamps.
He spoke of projects being promoted through the Municipal Climate Change Agency, such as the introduction of solar panels on sports fields, the plan to make all the city’s public lighting solar-powered through the Munisol Solar Park.
He also mentioned the Impulso Solar program, with a fund for small businesses to reduce their energy consumption; Peso Solar, with 50 percent of the cost going to charitable institutions; Tumbawatts for energy efficiency in homes; as well as the acquisition of 220 electric patrol cars, the construction of the largest electric car station in Latin America and the Reciclacentros (recycling centers).

For his part, Antonio Villaraigosa, former mayor of Los Angeles, California, highlighted in his message that we are in a battle against climate change; while Ken Roy, U.S. Consul in Hermosillo, stated that national efforts are key to avoid a potential catastrophe, and that it is even more important to work at a local level.
